How to Care For Your Skin After Laser Resurfacing

Fractional laser skin resurfacing addresses cosmetic concerns like acne scars, wrinkles, and fine lines. It is a quick and convenient procedure that employs laser light to remove damaged skin one layer at a time. But once the treatment is finished, how can you get the most out of your laser skin resurfacing results?

Double board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Machida offers the following after-treatment instructions to help you achieve your cosmetic goals.

Cleansing the Skin Gently

Keep the treatment site clean but get creative when you wash. During the first few days after the laser skin resurfacing, Dr. Machida may suggest using a vinegar or saline solution or medical-grade cleanser. The key is not to use harsh chemicals or exfoliating scrubs.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Your treated skin will feel a little dry, irritated and will peel and flake after laser skin resurfacing. That’s why it’s critical to moisturize your skin often. Pick a topical product that is clinically tested and will provide excellent benefits for quick healing. Remember to apply generously and often.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Sunscreen is the most essential product in your arsenal after skin resurfacing. Apply an SPF 50+ product daily whether you go outdoors or not. After the treatment, your skin is vulnerable to burning faster when exposed to dangerous UV rays. Wear a large-brimmed hat for added protection.

Manage Swelling

Mild swelling and redness are common after laser skin resurfacing. Cold compresses and ice packs help address inflammation and minimize redness and they also provide comfort by soothing irritated skin.

Skip Strong Serums and Creams

If you use skincare creams and serums, hold off for a few days after treatment. Active skincare ingredients like retinol can do more harm than good when your skin is healing. Consult with Dr. Machida for his advice on when you can resume your regular skincare routine.

Keep Your Head Elevated When Sleeping

Sleeping on your back with your head elevated on pillows or foam helps reduce swelling after laser skin resurfacing. When relaxing or resting, keep your head above your heart to reduce fluid buildup and swelling.

Hold Off on the Makeup

After laser resurfacing, your skin may look worse than before. Flakiness, redness, and crusting are commonplace. You may be tempted to cover these imperfections with makeup to hide scabs and flakes, but this will irritate healing skin. Instead, wait until your skin has healed completely before resuming applying makeup to your face.
